Sant’Angelo

Unlike the crumbly old ruins and ancient history we feature, this one is a very modern attraction, and quite extraordinary. The tiny town of Sant’Angelo di Roccalvecce to the east of Lago di Bolsena is an artistic marvel, where the walls and facades of the village’s buildings have been lovingly covered with giant, colorful murals.

At risk of being abandoned, the town set up a cultural association in 2016 and turned itself over to an all-female team of painters and street artists whose work features fairy tales, legends and fantasy, plus numerous bas-reliefs, mosaics, sculptures, shrines, and installations. But its the gorgeous colorful murals that catch the eye, attracted tourists, and revitalised the town.
