Forte Stella just outside Porte Ercole, built by the Spanish in the in the 16th century as part of their network of defensive fortifications during the State of the Presidi. Below it is the lovely Spiaggia Lunga beach, and the speck on the hill in the distance is the attractively named Torre dell’Avvoltore or Vulture Tower, built by the Aldobrandeschi in the early middle ages to warn of raids by Saracens and Barbary pirates.
This south eastern corner of the Argentario is beautiful, with lush green vegetation dotted with gated villas, little coves, crystal blue water, a number of lovely small free beaches, and a few charming little bars and cafes overlooking the coastline. There are few paid parking sites along the road, and it’s a short, though steep, walk down to the beaches.
