San Galgano

One of the more extraordinary things to see in the region is to visit the roofless, skeletal remains of the San Galgano abbey on the road north of Grosseto towards Siena. Next to it is the small tomb of Saint Galgano himself; a medieval warrior knight who drove his sword into a stone (which is there too) and chose to be a hermit. This was, some believe, the origin of the fable of King Arthur.

The Gothic church itself is amazing. Completed in the 13th century, it was routinely sacked by bandits until only the abbot remained, alone, by the end of the 14th century. The roof collapsed in 1786, the ruins were looted, the bell tower was hit by lightning and collapsed, and the church gave up and turned the monastery next to the church as a farm. The ruins are remarkable.
