The hot springs and thermal baths of Saturnia are in the valley below the old town, and are rich in mineral deposits and sulphur. They’re free, open year round, easily accessible, and with plenty of parking and a small bar and cafe nearby. There are a number of luxury spas in the area, but this one right here is free!

The town itself is small and pretty, with Roman gates, the Etruscan tomb, Roman gates and city walls, plus a beautiful small medieval church and an Aldobrandeschi fortress. It was an ancient Etruscan settlement, then an important Roman colony and political and social center after 183BC, because they recognised a good thing when they found it.
