There are three ways to cross to the Argentario peninsular from the mainland; the road through Orbetello and across the bridge built in 1842 by Grand Duke Leopold II, or the drive across the Giannella tombolo to the north with its camping villages and beach cafes, or the walking tracks through the pine forest of the Feniglia national park tombola to the south, our favorite.
The tombola beaches are fine golden sand, the water clear and fresh, and it gets deeper only gradually, so it’s great for smaller children. In Feniglia, there is a clutch of lovely cafes and a restaurant at the beginning of the beach on the Ansedonia side, after which it’s miles of virgin beach behind the large pine, oak, and ash trees of the nature reserve.
