Porta Senese, the Siena Gate, guarding the entrance to the inner city walls in Capalbio. First built by the ruling Aldobrandeschi family in the 11th century after they obtained it from the Tre Fontane abbey in Rome, the city fortifications were then extended and completed by the Orsini, of Siena.
The Sienese built a second ring of higher inner walls, with the gate at it’s northern entrance – hence the name – plus the fortress, a series of towers, houses, churches, and town squares. Outside the main gates is the town’s coolest bar, La Bottega del Folle, and the excellent Da Maria restaurant on the square directly opposite.
