Pitigliano cavi

Part of the ancient cavoni roads around Pitigliano, north of Capalbio. These remarkable excavated road systems, dug deep into the tuft rock, link a number of the Etruscan necropolis burial sites and settlements around Sovana, Sorano, and Pitigliano, but they also appear in Spain and Turkey and as far east and Jordan.

In the Maremma, these trenches vary in width and length, and are up to 20 meters deep, withe sheer high walls duck into the rock as early as 200BC. It’s not entirely sure why, or by whom, but the Romans extended and used them, and they’re so big in places that they’ve even been paved and incorporated into the modern Italian road network. So you can even drive through them!
