Monte Labbro nature reserve

Monte Labbro is on the south west side of Monte Amiata, and is wild and rocky with little vegetation. It is a large protected nature reserve, with wild cats, weasels, badgers, eagles, falcons, buzzards, and sparrows, and contains and a wildlife reserve with many types of deer grazing freely and wild Apennine wolves sometimes visible from the park’s observation decks.

At the summit is the Giurisdavidica Tower and settlement ruins of the hermit and prophet Davide Lazzaretti, who founded a religious community of 80 families on the site in the 19th century. He would disappear for weeks at a time, returning with new visions and prophesies, and declared he would become the leader of a Divine Republic of Spain, Italy, and France. In 1878 he led a large group of followers down to nearby Arcidosso, where he was shot and killed by the local police.
