The view from the ruins of the hermitage of the 19th century preacher and prophet, Davide Lazzaretti, on Monte Labbro looking across the valley to Monte Amiata in the distance.
Lazzaretti was considered by some to be the saviour of humanity prophesized as the ‘hunting hound’ in Dante’s Inferno. He founded a religious community, wrote blasphemous and inflammatory religious texts, was wildly popular, and hated by the Church and State. So he was murdered by the Carabinieri in 1878
The mountainous forest region of Monte Amiata is an extraordinary and untouched area of rural charm, ringed by beautiful medieval villages, and has miles of hiking and bike trails through the forests and woodlands and the wild volcanic landscape of the mountain summit.
