Macchiatonda

The Macchiatonda Nature Reserve covers 244 hectares of land between the coast and the highway below Capalbio. It’s a WWF wetlands and wildlife area of groves, newly introduced tree and shrub species, wetland meadows, and coastal lakes teeming with native and migratory bird species.

The area also includes extensive protected areas of uncultivated agricultural land and reclaimed marshland, including this large freshwater nature reserve hidden behind a tall embankment on the Strada Provinciale between Capalbio and the sea. That’s Capalbio in the hills in the background.
