Lago di Burano

Lago di Burano Nature Reserve is a protected wetlands oasis nestled between the coast at Macchiatonda and Capalbio Scalo, which has the local train station, the largest supermarket, and the best gelato is the area. The reserve is a WWF protected coastal dune ecosystem, rich in birdlife and waterfowl such as flamingos, cormorands, herons, ospreys and kingfishers, as well as porcupine, fox, tortoises and wild boar.

The oasis is also notable for the 16th Century Tower of Buranaccio, built by the State of Presidi on the shore of the lake. The Presidi was a small territory comprising the towns of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, Orbetello, Talamone and Ansedonia and their lands which in its brief history between the mid 16th Century and the beginning of the 19th were administered by the Kingdom of Naples, the Crown of Spain, the Habsburgs of Austria, the French Republic, and finally the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Not that the birds cared.
