Lago di Bolsena east of Capalbio is Italy’s largest volcanic lake, and great day trip. Spend the morning exploring the old medieval town center and castle of Bolsena on the northeastern shore overlooking the lake, then get a drink and gelato on the esplanade in Capodimonte before a long sunny afternoon on the beach south of Marta.
In the evening for dinner there are a couple of great seafood restaurants in Marta, or head to the cool lakeside bars and restaurants on Strada Rocco in the south east, below Montefiasconi. Da Ivaldo pizzeria on the corner of Rocca and Via del Lago is outstanding, and watch the beautiful sunsets from the chairs and tables on the grass looking out across the lake.
