Feniglia tombolo

The Feniglia nature reserve has been a protected woodland area since 1971, and is one of the prettiest experiences in the region. Situated on the southern tombola sandbar that runs from the Ansedonia mainland all the way across to Argentario, it’s a Mediterranean coastal forest of pine, oak, and ash trees, and is a haven for many species of birds and animals including deer, foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, blackbirds, herons, and cuckoos.

There are beautiful pathways running the entire length, bisected by smaller paths to the beach a kilometer apart. At the southern edge is the archaeological site of an ancient pre-Etruscan Villanovan settlement, and it is also where Caravaggio died in 1610, among the pines and marshes, of malaria and starvation while hiding from the authorities.
