Sunset over Capalbio, looking east and inland, with the hill of Monteti behind it. Capalbio is one of the prettiest little towns in Tuscany, perched on a hill overlooking the sea, ringed by high fortress walls that you can go up to and walk right around admiring the view. The old center is lovely, peaceful and quite enchanting, with little cobbled streets and squares and a few charming cafes and bars looking out over the countryside.
Outside the walls is the Via Circonvallazione road which runs around the hill and down through the newer part of the town. There is a municipal carpark hidden away below the trees in the back part of town, and on the hill below the old center are the little food stores, a bakery, butcher, newsagent, and delicassen, plus a gelateria, the best bar in town, and a couple of fine restaurants.
