Bagni di San Filippo

The Bagni di San Filippo are the free thermal hot springs, rich in sulphur, that cascade down from massive white and blue limestone rock formations in the thick pine forest just near Monte Amiata, north west of Capalbio. The largest rock is the attractively named Fosso Bianco, or White Whale, which stands out from the surrounding forest and changes color depending on the season.

The baths are named after Saint Philip, a 13th century hermit and priest who lived in the area and was canonised for his austere piety and reviving the order of the Servites. The baths were well known to the Romans, popular during the middle ages, and a favorite of Florence’s ruling Medici family during the Renaissance, too.
