Vulci

The attractively named Devil’s bridge crossing the Fiori river gorge in Vulci, right next to the archeological museum housed in the medieval fortress on the other side of the river. The bridge was first built by the Etruscans in the 3rd century BC, then rebuilt by the Romans, and the fortress – originally a Benedictine abbey – was built to protect it because the crossing was an important border post between the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

As was usual, it was fought over by everybody from the 12th century onwards, but today the museum in the fortress castle holds some of the most important artifacts excavated from nearby Vulci, the largest and wealthiest of the Etrscan cities. It is also interesting because it was the home of future Pope Paul III, who lived here from 1513 onwards, and also Luciano Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother, when he was Prince of nearby Canino.
