Villa Settefinestre

In the valley at the bottom of the hill below Capalbio is the excavated ruins of Villa Settefinestre, a large Roman villa built by the rich and powerful Volusii family in the 1st century BC. The Volusii were influential senators and slave owners, and the villa was a large agricultural farm and vineyard, expanded in the 1st century AD, then fortified during the civil wars and crisis that enveloped the nearby colony of Cosa.

In the 15th century the villa and its fortress were converted into a more modern farming complex, but then fell into ruin. In the 1970’s a luxury holiday residence was built neaby, and the ruins themselves were excavated and documented by archeologists, who learned much about argricultural farming in Roman countrysides, and how the farming techniques of Roman agronomists were put into practice. The ruins are open to the public.
