The Giardino dei Tarocchi, or Tarot Garden, was created between 1979 and 2002 by the remarkable French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, who devoted her extraordinary life to these twenty two monumental sculptures made with reinforced concrete and covered with mirrors and ceramic mosaics. It’s five minute’s drive from Capalbio, open to the public, and world famous.

Born in France in 1930, a sculptor, painter, filmmaker, and author of colorful hand-illustrated books after a traumatic childhood, she was little known in the United States by hailed as one of the most significant monumental arts of the 20th century, and died after chronic health problems attributed to repeated exposure to the airborne glass fibers and petrochemical fumes she used in her work.
