Saturnia

North east of Capalbio are the thermal springs and ancient town of Saturnia, first settled in the bronze age, site of Etruscan settlements in the 8th century BC, a Roman colony and important administrative center, and then battled over by numerous regional powers during the middle ages before everybody forgot about it in the 17th century and it was abandoned.

The Romans, however, prized it. It was a center of Roman political and social life, travelers stopped there, and wealthy citizens built villas there, prizing the healing and rejuvenating powers of its warm sulfurous spring water. The baths at the Mulino falls in the field below the town is free and open year round, with ample parking and mud baths nearby, too.
