The Hermitage of Poggio Conte is a remarkable small Gothic church and adjacent sculpted caves and rooms carved deep into the tuft rock behind a waterfall at the end of a dirt path on the banks of the beautiful Fiore river, north east of Capalbio. The river and valley is beautiful for a day trip to swim and relax anyway, but the Hermitage itself is really special.
Made in 1027 by hermits of the Templar Order and occupied until the 14th century, it has domes, vaulted ceilings, pillars, aspes, niches, seats, and benches all carved entirely into the rock, and was elaborately decorated with sculptures, floral design patterns, alchemical symbols, and what used to be rare, brightly colored frescoes.
