Poggio Conte

The Hermitage of Poggio Conte is northeast of Capalbio on the banks of the Fiora river. Medieval hermits carved these small and spectacular little Gothic churches with pillars, domes, vaults, and chapels into the rock, complete with Catholic symbols, altars, and mysterious symbols some believe to be associated with the Order of the Knights Templar.

The Poggio Conte the most striking, and is a short hike along the river, which itself is a beautiful spot to spend the afternoon hiking, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful river valley. The easiest way to get there is the road north to Manciano, then a right turn on the SP116 south towards Canino and turn off (or park and walk) about a kilometer after you cross the Fiora river. Seriously, it’s amazing.
