North east of Capalbio on the road to Lake Bolsena not far from the baths of Saturnia are the three remarkable little towns of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano. Each have their charms, but Pitigliano is the jewel. Carved from the volcanic rock of a steep cliff, Pitigliano has ancient Bronze age and Etruscan origins, with ruins of a necropolis and temple, and many ancient artifacts on display in the local museum.
From the 16th century onwards this extraordinary little town supported a large Jewish population, who were encouraged to settle there and protected from persecution by the ruling Medici family, Dukes of Florence. It also played an important role in protecting them from the racial laws and opposition forces during WWII. The town center features a Medici aquaduct, a Jewish Synagogue, and many beautiful Rennaisance era buildings.
