Piazza Belvedere is the lovely town square in Capalbio outside the main gate of the old fortress walls. It’s perched high on the hill looking out over to the Monteti hill, and features a beautiful statue and fountain set in a garden by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle called ‘Il Drago,’ which is familiar because of the world famous Tarot Garden nearby, which features 22 of her enormous monumental artworks made in steel and concrete covered with glass, mirrors and colored ceramics.

On more straightforward matters, the piazza is also home to the fabulous Da Maria restaurant, which specialising in local cuisine, boar, and seafood with tables on the square looking out over the hills, and the very cool La Bottega del Folle bar right next to the fortress gates. This is also the best place to get gelato in town, excellent coffee, or an aperitivo. You might forget all about wandering in to see the medieval marvels right behind you…
