Orbetello

Orbetello was an ancient Etruscan settlement built on the narrow peninsula in the middle of the lagoon between Argentario and the mainland. It passed to the Romans in 280 BC, who had settled in nearby Ansedonia, and was ruled by the Aldobrandeschi family in the middle ages up till the 14th Century. It’s a remarkable, beautiful, and unique town.

After years of struggle with the rulers of Orvieto and Pitigliano, it was captured by the Republic of Siena, before being occupied by the Spanish, the French, and finally the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It’s only 15 minutes up the highway from Capalbio, and has many lively bars, excellent restaurants, stylish shops, and one or two large supermarkets.
