Farnese

Northeast of Capalbio on a quiet windling little road to Lago di Bolsena in unassuming little Farnese, a small town with a remarkable history; as the home and fiefdom of the wealthy and influential Farnese family dynasty, which included in its members Pope Paul III, cardinals, numerous dukes, lords, consuls, military commanders, a Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, and a Spanish Queen.

Over centuries they increased their power and influence as defenders of the papacy, built large and opulent villas and palaces, were great patrons, commissioners, and collectors of art, ruled many territories, were successful captains of armies unfailingly loyal to the Papal States, and (probably) founded Orbetello. And little Farnese is where they’re from!
