The very pretty Cascata Pellico nature reserve on the outskirts of Canino, east of Capalbio. Canino has ancient roots as an important agricultural center for the Etruscan civilization, and origin of the prized Canino strain of olive trees that have been harvested there for their oil for thousands of years.
Canino was ruled by the powerful Farnese family dynasty which included Pope Paul III, cardinals, dukes, the governor of the Netherlands and the Queen of Spain amongst its members. It was also the home of Luciano Bonaparte, who had a rather more famous brother , and was eventually ruled by the Torlonia family; fabric merchants and tailors in Rome who became so embarrassing wealthy that they founded a bank, built huge villas, were made dukes by the pope, and then prince’s after undertaking the gigantic task of draining Lake Fucino in L’Aquila in 1878 that has been proposed and attempted by everybody since Julius Caesar and Emperor Claudius.
