One of the restaurants perched on the outer medieval wall of Capalbio, with a fantastic view out over the nature reserve and down to the coast. The path runs all the way around the old town, with the high fortress inner wall above it which you can also walk around, either admiring the view or peering back inside and over the old town center. This is a lovely time of year too, still hot, very warm evenings, and fantastic sunsets.
Capalbio was fortified first by the Aldobrandeschi family, who obtained the town and lands from the Tre Fontane abbey in Rome in the 13th century. In 1416 it fell under the control of the Republic of Siena and the Orsini family, who extended and completed the fortifications and construction of the town. It was an economically propserous period, and they built higher walls, the castle, houses, churches, and town squares. The main entrance to the town, the Porta Senese, still preserves its 15th century wooden gates and locks!
