Lago di Burano

Directly below Capalbio on the coast is Lago di Burano, a large coastal lagoon and wetlands area that is part of the Lake Burano Oasis, which includes the narrow strip of coastal dunes between the lake and the sea. It was the first WWF protected oasis in Italy and included in the international list of important wetlands.

The oasis is a unique ecosystem of Mediterranean scrub and beach vegetation, with many species of birds and animals and plants. It is home to flamingos, herons, mallards, ospreys, and kingfishers, and porcupines, foxes, turtles, and wild boars. An it’s open to the public with guided tours four days a week in the late afternoon.
