Bolsena towns

Sunset at Lago di Bolsena east of Capalbio. It’s a fabulous day trip, Italy’s largest volcanic lake, and ringed by fascinating towns to explore. Bolsena in the north east has a gorgeous old medieval town center with an extraordinary tunnel town gate that’s like going back in a time machine.

Pretty little Marta in the west has great seafood restaurants on the lake shore, Capodimonte just above it is towered over by the imposing Farnese fortress, built by the Aldobrandeschi and used as a papal court in the 16th century by Pope Paul III, and Strada Rocco in the south east, below Montefiasconi, has a lovely lakeside esplanade, cool lakeside bars, and a great pizzeria.
