In the hills of inland Maremma north of Capalbio is the pretty and proud little town of Scansano. Well known for its distinctive Morellino wine, it was very active in supporting Garibaldi during the Risorgimento, and fought both the Nazis and fascists during the second world war. In the 16th century Scansano was also home to the ‘Africhielli’ abandoned children of Turkish pirates and Maremma mothers, who found sanctuary, a warm welcome, and work.
The area is lovely; with ancient Etruscan ruins at nearby Ghiaccioforte, imposing castles including those at Montorgiali and Montepò, magnificent churches and convents, wooded hills and gorges dotted with vineyards and hamlets, and fine views down to the sea and inland to Monte Amiata.
